Make Talk, Not War

THANK GOD, the bombing is over. Now life can get back to "normal". But nothing will be "normal" again. I am a teacher of the English language in Novi Sad, Serbia, one of two republics in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. All my life I have been pacifist. I donšt believe in the war. Too many people in my family died fighting war against Hitler, against fascism.

I never thought I would see war in my country. But something terrible happened. The other countries in the world decided it was my fault Albanians got persecuted, they said I was criminal, they wanted me and my students to be dead for sins we never committed.

I never voted for Milosevic. Nobody I know ever voted for Milosevic. In fact, we protest against his regime and tried to find ways to get him out. But it didnšt matter. To you we are bad people and you attack us with your "smart" weapons. In Your eyes, we are all guilty. Now I will go back to my class. They love the English language, Western culture, and this bombing has them all confused. It has me confused, too. We will try to pick up from where we left off. Phrasal verbs... crazy English grammar with no rules except the "exception"... Perhaps we are crazy people because we still try to learn language of people who want to kill us.
