Letter: Same Debate, Different Day

It is destined to remain the most debated language learning topic in the United States. Should there or shouldn’t there be bilingual education. Your cover story “Bilingual Balance” (ALR, January/February 2000) reinforced the fact that essentially there is no right or wrong way. Both arguments have their merits, it seems to come down a “simple matter of preference” to those who are the policymakers. I will ask this though, shouldn’t we not concentrate on those who are the recipients of the “policy” decisions - our students - rather than trying to win political battles?

Finally how about this for a novel idea, in our democratic society wouldn’t it be nice if we were able to offer a choice to our students as to whether they would like to learn in a bilingual environment or English only. Oh, if we only lived in an ideal world.
