Fixing Problems I refer to the
article on teaching ESL in corrections (Book
'Em) which was published in the Nov/Dec '98 issue. It was mentioned
that one of the problems faced by ESL teachers working in correctional
facilities is that of professional isolation. There is limited opportunity
for collegiality because of geographical distance between prisons, and
security concerns.
The world-wide e-mail forum for teachers of ESL, TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU, would be an ideal milieu for these professionals to congregage electronically to share ideas, and discuss the issues peculiar to teaching in jails and prisons. If enough interest were shown, perhaps a branch for that purpose could be set up. To subscribe to the forum, send an e-mail to LISTSERV@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU with the following message: SUB TESL-L yourfirstname yourlastname. You will receive a welcome message with more information and instructions. Sincerely, |
