Brush Up Your Spanish with Champs

If you are teaching Spanish and want to supplement your lessons - or if you're a learner at the intermediate or advanced level, I recommend you consider a subscription to Puerto del Sol. Published bimonthly (by Champs Elysee), itıs a Spanish language audiomagazine thatıs both lively and interesting.

The editions I looked at featured lessons about the poet, Garcia Lorca, and "La Casa de America"a palace in Madrid. The lessons were genuinely entertaining and instructive _ I felt like I was learning a whole lot more than just a language. I had heard of ³la generacion del 98,² _ a group of Spanish writers who were entering their prime at the time of the Spanish-American War (1898) _ but was fascinated to learn more about them and their times.

Of course, Lorcaıs works and his own tragic history are know the world over, but it was fascinating to read his poems and the background to his life written in his own language.

The audiocassettes are supplemented by listening exercises. I really liked the way the questions were presented so that the learner felt very much part of the lesson. There is also a website (www.puerta-del-sol.com/) which features a bulletin board where learners can interact with each other and teachers of Spanish can share their experiences.

Teachers and learners of French and German will be interested to know that Champs Elysee produces similar magazines in these languages as well. Thatıs the only problem _ so many languages, too little time to learn them all!
