Columnist Calls Language Learning Useless

In a recent column for the Washington Post, Why Waste Time on a Foreign Language?, Jay Mathews argues that “based on what actually happens in high schools, learning a foreign language often is a waste of time.”

Language Magazine staffer Kate Sommers-Dawes has responded in her own letter to the editor.

    1. Perhaps starting to learn a foreign language in middle school will be more beneficial to students. Providing more years of foreign language learning could be the answer since this is what other industrialized countries do.

    2. I think everybody supports what Kate says. In an increasingly global world, Washington Post theory sounds more like a canteen discussion than a properly analyzed press subject. Generalist media often speak to loud to say nothing.
